GPS Headunit Question

Our X5 3.0 has basic CD business radio w/no navigation. My wife wants to upgrade to something below with GPS. Iphone hook-up and all the other stuff. Has anyone tried something like the below? Is this something that would be plug and play with BMW wiring? I'm not too familiar with electronics. Thanks in advance.

Yes. There are some very detailed threads on the higher end units Dynavin and Avin.

If your current system includes DSP, consider your self sh!t out of luck. Almost all the aftermarket systems will n ot work with DSP. You will still need to retain the MID display. Most people just relocate it to the glove box, but that will require extending the wiring for the MID.

Dynavin works with DSP but that is the only one I know that does.

Do you have a DSP button on your radio?

If you do, you have DSP. Your choices are limited to Dynavin N6 if you want an easy install. It is a great unit.

Don't know much about that unit but you do know the openings for the E53 have rounded corners right?

This is what my radio looks like. I don't see a DSP button.
So does that mean I can put in any aftermarket unit with navigation?

I just installed the Dynavin N6 unit in my 2006 E53 - it is spectacular. I had the exact setup you did - I would not do any of the Asian models for less - way too many QC issues.
