Transmission Fail Safe Mode Problem figured out!!
Frustration is an understatement when it comes to having you vehicle locked in transmission fail safe mode. My buddy and I scanned my X5 repeatedly trying to figure out where the problem was. We tested voltage and recognized the alternator wasn't putting out proper voltage so I pulled the alternator and my buddy pulled it apart only to find the 'rebuilt' alternator had the cheapest parts imaginable in it so he sourced good parts and replaced them. With the alternator working properly, we turned out attention to the ride height leveler not working properly throwing codes but while we had one of them out, I disconnected the battery, touched both positive and negative cables together draining any residual power and I pulled the ECU and the transmission ECU. This is where it gets interesting. I found corrosion on the pins of the transmission ECU so my buddy pulled it apart and found corrosion inside on some of the pins leading into two of the chips. He used Deoxit to clean them, then he put it back together and sealed it on the outside. I put it in last night and I now have a properly working X5 again. UNREAL!! One shop actually told me they advised me to replace the transmission!! I promptly told them that with it being only 2yrs old and having 16,000kms on it, I was positive it wasn't the transmission.
