Anyway to lock awd???
I own 2 x5s. I love the xdrive my 2004 but hate it in my 2002. Is there a way to lock the awd into a permanent 68/32 split?? From the research I have done the pre lci e53 have a semi awd system that only comes on if it senses wheel slip.

You got misinformed on your research. The pre-facelife (pre-2004) had the permanent 32/68 split system, which you indicated you hate. Since you like xDrive (post-2004), which have the variable torque split, why would you want to lock it permanently into a system you said you hated? xDrive is still bias toward rear wheel drive and can direct up to 100% power to either axles, which is a far superior system than the "fixed" torque split system.

Ditto dkl about the two AWD systems used on the e53. Sorry I don't have any suggestions as to "locking" AWD...I have heard that pulling the fuse on the xDrive system can turn the facelift e53 into a 2WD (rear).
The pre-facelift e53's AWD system was similar to BMW's earlier system used on the e30/e34 "ix" models...but with the modern addition of DSC. It wasn't officially marketed as such...but you may run across the term DSC-X which refers to the AWD systems that incorporated DSC on the AWD models that came to market just prior to the debut of the variable split-torque xDrive system. Hopefully the info below can help enlighten how the pre facelift AWD system with its "fixed" 32/68 torque split works in conjunction with DSC...which differentiates it from the earlier AWD system that didn't have DSC...and the latter (current) xDrive AWD system: ![]() <<<<this is how DSC-X works (DSC+AWD) on e53 X5s built between 1999-9/03 with its "fixed" 32/68 {front/rear} torque split >>>> ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
