I thought rear diff, failing guibo, bad bushings all that and actually threw some money at it before I had a BMW mechanic from work ride in it totally by accident and say “wow you’ve really got some slop in the valve body”. I will add that I also noticed mine ever so slightly when accelerating away from a stop light. Mine was more of a dry thud vs metal on metal sound FWIW.

I have had a clunk from the back of my X5 for quite a while. I'm pretty sure it's either subframe bushing or one of the myriad ball joints back there. I can reproduce the thud going slowly over a speed bump 100%. Wife's X5 doesn't make the thud.
