Driving in snow/icey conditions without a good set of wintertires is almost the same as driving your car around in traffic, knowing that is has no brakes at all. And who in their right mind would do that?

In Sweden (just across the bridge from where i live) it is illegal to drive a vehicle without dedicated winter tires from dec. 1 to march 31.
There is a reason for that.

Wouldn't be because companies like Nokians, and Gislaved Tires are located in Sweden, would it???

Nokians are made in Finland, but Gislaved is indeed swedish. And even though it is not completely unlikely that Gislaveds lobbyists might have backed the idea up, the law is actually based on accident statistics, showing that winter tires can prevent a great number of accidents during wintertime.

01 E53 3.0i here too

I run a 17in set of Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V1s. The X5 goes through anything with proper snow tires. They're $112ea at TireRack.com

My daily driver, an E46 330i has a set of 17in Nokians; they're just as good.

So if people in Sweden buys a new car in the winter it comes with winter tires and if they buy it in summer does it still come with winter tires or summer tire? After all, wouldn't a dealer be in non-compliance with the law if they are selling cars with summer tires in the winter?

In parts of Canada its the same. I think my province should have this rule. TOO many idiots driving on glare ice at times with bald summers or all seasons. CANADA CAN NOT USE ALL SEASONS IN WINTER. We have ONE season in WINTER and its called WINTER!!!!!!

All seasons are great in summers cause they handle rain/water on roads even better than many summer tires (which are basically designed for dry/bare roads).

Even Summer (especialllly summers) and All season tires have their rubber compund change properties when the temps drop. Even on bare dry roads, summer tires turn to plastic when it gets to 7° C/44 °F and colder. So its smarter to have winter tires which HAVE a rubber compound that can deal with colder temps and still stay rubber.
UGH this topic just makes me upset.

Doesn't matter much what tires you have on for a glare of ice.

touché. I should have said slippery snow conditions, not just ice...

but having said that, Studs are sensational upgrade to ice tires cause they REALLLLY do help stop/corner faster (as seen in the vids posted in this thread). My wife's Chev Silverado has them and they are the Pigs Tits!!!!

Studded tires are illegal in many areas. Other than getting through fresh snow the best choice is to slow down, plan ahead and leave a bigger gap between you and other vehicles
