2003 BMW X5 3.0 P2098 code keeps coming on.

Hey guys new to forum... Looking for some help.

2003 BMW X5 3.0 P2098 keeps coming back after OBD reset. Sometimes in 10 min other times 2 hrs. Also get misfire code P0313 from time to time.

Says P2098 Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too Lean Bank 2

Things I did already
Changed 2nd O2 on Cat 2 no change. But had to weld it cause stripped.
Did smoke test no leaks
Intake Boots are good no cracks.
Use premium gas all the time

Check fuel pressure? You don't say your mileage but BMW fuel pumps are good for ~150,000 miles. Seen them go much higher obviously but it's something to check.

Ever done the fuel filter? It's cheap and easy insurance.

Read a thread on a forum, P2096 and P2098 are common for high mileage E53's, and there's a service technical bulletin on reprogramming the DME to eliminate such codes. One owner claimed the reprogram worked great after throwing tons of parts into it and not any improvement. Others, kinda keep scratching their heads as codes just keep coming back.

One thread mentioned it might due to exhaust leak. Let me know if you find a way to test it. I'm currently having P2096 code that doesn't go away.

Good Luck, and I'm subscribing.

Yeah, unfortunately those codes can be thrown by all sorts of things. Vac leaks (you smoked it already so good on you, most don't), MAF, DISA valve (maybe), exhaust leaks, fuel pump/filter, etc.

See, the thing bothers me is, if it's vacuum leak or DISA valve, why ONLY bank 2?

LeiZ I was thinking the same thing..... SMH Thanx guys for all your advice.. 7 months later this damn code is killing me. I've been told it's the Cat but wouldn't there be a code for that. Also could the fact that the O2 sensor was was stripped and it was welded to stay in place be an issue. But than again no codes for O2 sensors..

Do you experience any difference? I barely notice any change, MPG has been down about 2~3, but it's 10F outside. Expected drop. Other than that, nope. Car still drives like a champ.

Sorry, missed that it was only bank 2. Maybe injector(s) on bank 2? Don't see those go bad very often... but everything works until it doesn't right.

Might want to get the BMW specific codes pulled... or use something that does live data so you can see what is going on with the engine.

Mpg is around 14 combined kind of lower than usual but it's 25 in NJ. It does run kind of rough and when in drive it's even wrose and throws a misfire code from time to time. Gonna bring to somebody who can check all functions...
