PIAA Si-Tech Wipers v. Bosch Icons

I'm trying to decide between a set of PIAA Si-Tech wipers and the Bosch icons. I found a thread where many were using the Icons - some, but not all said they worked well on the X5.

Who has tried the PIAA's? Anyone try both?

I have the Icons on the front wipers and a Rain-X Frameless on the rear wiper. I put all three on when I first bought my E53. Was going on a road trip the day after I bought it. Would have put Icons all the way around but the auto parts store I went to didn't stock an Icon for the rear. That was in March of 2014 and I haven't had to change any of them. Every time I wash the X I wipe the blades of all the wipers to keep them clean and they have remained chatter and streak free. Survived the end of winter in New York and now going on there second winter in Georgia.

I have not tried PIAAs product so I can not comment on them. Tried the Rain-X frameless design on a 2500 Ram and they didn't last as long as the Icons. I suspect they have lasted so long on my E53 because the rear doesn't get used nearly as often.

Whats the price on the PIAA wipers? I know that they make quality product when it comes to automotive lighting, but I've never used their wipers

Looks like the PIAA's are in the same general range as the Icons ($26-29 each). The frameless models are called Si-Techs. PIAA website lists the following part #'s for my `06 X5, and it looks like Tire Rack has them in stock:

  • PIAA
    SI-Tech Silicone Flat Wiper Blade
    • Manufacturer Part #: 97045
    • Note: 18" Rear fitment.

    • Each:

    • Manufacturer Part #: 97055
    • Note: 22" Passenger side wiper.

    • Each:

    • Manufacturer Part #: 97060
    • Note: 24" Driver side wiper.

    • Each:

  • $29.00
  • Availability: In Stock

That isn't a bad price. I have the Icons set as the benchmark in terms of frameless wipers. I've tried most of the frameless designs over the last couple years, Rain-X Latitude, Michelin Stealth, & the Trico Onyx. Kind of hard to make a topic like wiper blades interesting but I hate having noisy, chattering, or worn out wipers, very big pet peeve of mine, and its something I'd rather spend the money on once and not have to worry about it for a while. I'm interested to see how they stack up against the competition.

It sounds like quite the procedure to set up the PIAA wipers so that they work properly.

Here's an Amazon review describing the process:

Amazon.com: Shawn Dickens' review of PIAA 97055 Si-Tech Silicone Flat Wiper Bla...

Here's another Amazon review mentioning that they're not good at wiping away bugs or mud:

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1PJ0UO...wasThisHelpful

All that said, I'm intrigued...living in the "northwet", we get lots of rain and road spray. So good wiper blades are important.

Used to sell both at a car audio place I worked at. The PIAA blades were 2x the cost of the icons (retail) and required a "setup" procedure. PIAA recommended having the windshield acid washed then scraped with a razor blade prior to applying their "proprietary window treatment", yeah rainx. I tried both on my Dodge 1 ton, and the PIAA's didn't seem to clear mud and debris as well, even after performing the setup procedure. Stick with the Bosch.

Good to know. I'll just stick with the Icons.

Have the PIIA blades. Bought them because I heard good things about silicone blades, and now I can say that they work great but nothing really impressive.
