BMW X5 Parking Sensor Problem

Hi,

I'm new to this Forum - please be gentle with me. . . .

I purchased a 2001 X5 4.4 Sport recently and am very very impressed with it !

I have a problem with the parking sensors - when I engage "PDC" it bleeps at me and flashes the light on the button. The manual says simply "Take it to a dealer".

Could someone give me somewhere to start investigating the problem? I'm not afraid of getting my hands dirty but need a starting point.

To complicate the issue - they worked when I bought the car and now they work about 1 in 10 times I use it.

Any advice welcome.

Cheers & thanks in advance.

Welcome!

The best first step is to clean the surface of the sensors. If they are dirty they think there is something there. You are looking for the row of disks (the size of a one pound coin), on both the front and rear bumper.

If that doesn't make a difference, you can check the connections. Behind each sensor, if you can reach it, the cables clip in. It may be possible to find one loose, or in need of re-seating.

After that, take it to the dealer.

Good luck.

Absolutely correct. Has there been any bodywork done, or bumpers removed? Usually a bad connection... if not, bad sensor -- dealer will have to check for that.

Rob_ will most likely have some input as well.... he's the expert!

Welcome to X5world, by the way!

Hi!
Take your X to any noiseless area, switch ignition ON and engage reverse gear.Listen and put the finger to
each sensor. You must heard and sense a 4Herz (four times per second) impulses from every sensor in front and rear of car. Replace sensor(s) which not transmitting ultrasonic signals. Another way is taking
your car to GT-1 or DIS computer to define which
sensor is faulty.Good luck!

I guess "sense" would be the operative word since the human ear hears the 20-20K range.

I'd like you to picture the following situation - it's about 11 O'clock at night, it's very dark and very quite. You see a man on his drive, on his knees scrabbling around placing his ear at different points on the bumpers of his car, front and back - he seems deep in thought. You approach the man and ask him if he's "OK?" he responds "Someone on the Internet told me to do it". I'll leave the rest to your imagination - needless to say my neighbour thinks I've thrown a cog.

Having said the above. . . You are spot on.. . ! - thank you for that gem of information. I have a clicking (4hz) from each sensor although some produce a "cleaner" 4Hz. I will this evening check all the electrical connections and re-listen. . I'll then replace the ones not producing a "clean" 4Hz.

Thank you once again all, I'll keep you informed (as long as my neighbour does not have me committed).

Cheers all.
