My guess is if you use an OE gasket, install as recommended by BMW and torque down the cover in the proper sequence it won't leak. OE gasket is cheap compared to tearing it down again.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Bcredliner, I'm going to remove the valve cover and see perhaps in the next couple of weeks when the weather warms up a bit. Car is sitting in the garage for now so it's not an urgent work...
