Because this is the cause of my exhaust leak noise that I asked about back in December. This part is cracked and causing the noise.

I am good with a wrench. Put race cars together back in the day, lol. The only reason I asked was because I wasn't standing in front of the X5 at the time. The BMW guy called and told me some secondary line had a crack and wanted $567 to fix. I asked him for the part #, checked realoem.com, and because i couldn't get a picture in my mind of where the heck that line was, I asked here.

I got the X5 from the stealership without getting it fixed. I looked under the hood and notice a few screws were holding it together. I got the part new (oem) off a seller on ebay for $25.

Searching the web I came upon this:
"Vacuum air line for M62 engines. Commonly bent during the removal of water pump, can cause running issues."
https://www.ecstuning.com/Search/Air_Pump/ES26643/

Chances are I bent this pipe when I changed the water pump in December.

Good job! Now I understand why you were asking. Most people post stuff without even understanding the issue/part relationships. It appears you do.

This maybe a long shot for the E53 but the E60 has a vacuum operated a exhaust valve near the tailpipes that open up under increased vacuum when engine revs over a certain rpms maybe that valve is stuck open OR you forgot to plug in the vacuum hose for it after your repair.
All this is me assuming the E53 has the same setup there as the E60's.
Hope this helps.
I stumbled on this thread as I have intermittent opening of that valve when driving thru heavy rain......??

The E53 M62 4.4 does not have those vacuum operated flaps on the muffler. I don't know about the 4.6 or 4.8 variants, but the OP has the M62 4.4

Neither the 4.6is or the 4.8is have the flaps

20 days later I hope the part/noise finally resolved it self. Let us know did you DIY or pay the dealership?
