Given the miles of hoses, the gas cap might not be the actual problem. There is a code specifically for the gas cap seal, it's going to be defined as Gross Leak or Small Leak, depending on the severity.

Using this link, P0445 Evap Emission Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted DTC, I think you have a hardware issue with the purge valve itself, or the signal to turn it on or off.

Thanks for the link...I guess it was just wishful thinking on my part. Lol

At cold starts I hear this.....no ticking but loud hissing for about 60seconds. I posted this video when I first heard it, but did get any helpful responses.

I researched it for a while, and came across some old posts where people described a hiss at start and that it was normal....

X5 expert thoughts?

But I searched and was unable to find the seal being sold as a separate item. I'd like to get a new seal. But it looks like I'd need to buy the gas cap assembly to get the seal. Right?
At 170K miles on the X just get a new gas cap from BMW. They are not that expensive.

Thanks for all your help!

Does anyone know anything about resetting the evap ses light? I have an obdIi and a BMW scanner 1.4.0 and I can't get the light to reset at all.

I clear the code, but that light never turns off, not even momentarily??? I have tried with the engine running as well as with it off...

I also found somewhere to let the vehicle cold idle for 4 minutes, did that, nothing....

My last hope is to pull the battery cable, but I never like to go that route if I don't have too.

I understand that he problem may still exist, but shouldn't I be able to turn off the light, even if just for a few seconds?

Thanks

Why do you fear disconnecting the battery cable on your X5. Its not one of those vehicles that you have to have a secondary power source for proper operation.

Disconnecting the battery cable will not clear the SES/CEL/MIL warning light. If it did...you wouldn't have the million+ posts all over the internet about not passing emissions inspections.

If the light is still illuminated...it means the sensor that the sensor is still reading a fault.

You can try running a route that would cover the FTP (federal test protocol) drive cycle...which would test ALL of the emissions systems sensors...and if they don't register any faults...then the light should go out if all things are correct. You can see that there are FOUR tests (see the info on the top half of the chart below) that will test the systems listed on the lower half of the chart.

If the code is not clearing, then the issue is not resolved. You are probably fixing the wrong thing. You say that the gas cap does not fit right, and this can easily be problematic but not the problem that is making the light be on. Your code, P0445, says that the purge valve is bad. If the system fails to hold pressure, then you get a code for Small Leak or Gross Leak, depending on how badly it leaks. These codes are different than the Purge Valve code.

Not sure if the X5 has one... but last time I had an evap code it turned out to be the carbon filter/valve in the trunk.

Ya! This is the purge valve! Located on the front of the engine on a 4.4.

Sorry, forgot to finish my thought... I was having that code on an e36 328i with an m52b28, which is why I said it was in the trunk. LOL

Sounds like a reasonable place to start then. Might try to find a good used one.
