Thanks for all your help!
Does anyone know anything about resetting the evap ses light? I have an obdIi and a BMW scanner 1.4.0 and I can't get the light to reset at all. I clear the code, but that light never turns off, not even momentarily??? I have tried with the engine running as well as with it off... I also found somewhere to let the vehicle cold idle for 4 minutes, did that, nothing.... My last hope is to pull the battery cable, but I never like to go that route if I don't have too. I understand that he problem may still exist, but shouldn't I be able to turn off the light, even if just for a few seconds? Thanks

Disconnecting the battery cable will not clear the SES/CEL/MIL warning light. If it did...you wouldn't have the million+ posts all over the internet about not passing emissions inspections.
![]() If the light is still illuminated...it means the sensor that the sensor is still reading a fault. You can try running a route that would cover the FTP (federal test protocol) drive cycle...which would test ALL of the emissions systems sensors...and if they don't register any faults...then the light should go out if all things are correct. You can see that there are FOUR tests (see the info on the top half of the chart below) that will test the systems listed on the lower half of the chart. ![]()

If the code is not clearing, then the issue is not resolved. You are probably fixing the wrong thing. You say that the gas cap does not fit right, and this can easily be problematic but not the problem that is making the light be on. Your code, P0445, says that the purge valve is bad. If the system fails to hold pressure, then you get a code for Small Leak or Gross Leak, depending on how badly it leaks. These codes are different than the Purge Valve code.

Not sure if the X5 has one... but last time I had an evap code it turned out to be the carbon filter/valve in the trunk.

Ya! This is the purge valve! Located on the front of the engine on a 4.4.

![]() Sounds like a reasonable place to start then. Might try to find a good used one.
