2001 X5 4.4 Grinding When Put In Gear

Hello, I'm new to the Beemer World. I just purchased a 2001 x5 and was traveling from Florida back home to Texas when the vehicle suddenly started to knock and shake. I immediately pulled off to the shoulder where it only got violently worst before I came to a stop. The car idles fine in park and in neutral. When put into and gear (reverse, drive, etc.) it sounds like metal grinding. At first I thought the sound was coming from the top of the motor ( headers area) but it kind of seems like it is coming from down then right/drivers side of the motor. I'm not for certain. When I put it in neutral to push it further off the road, it sounded like chains dragging while the wheels were rotating. Sorry for the vauge description, I am new to these vehicles. I hope someone can make some sense of this. I am currently stranded in Florida with my family. The x5 is at the dealership and I know I will not be able to afford it. Just waiting on an estimate. Thanks so much for any help!

Sounds like the transfer case chain.

$100 part, $1000 labor.

I am pretty savy with mechanics. Would this be an easy fix/replacement? Thanks!

A lot needs to be removed to get the T case out.

Exhaust center sections, heat shields, front and rear drive shafts, TC cross-member (with trans supported).

The upper bolts that secure the TC to trans are a major PITA to access!

You're welcome.

Good luck with it.

Could also be the front drive shaft that connects the transfer case to the front differential. Since you have a 2001 X5 you have a NV125 transfer case. The front shaft splines that goes into the transfer case are known to strip out. Unlike the X drive transfer case of later X5, the front drive on a BMW with a NV 125 transfer case is always on.

Here's a link to the problem.
