Question wild rpms m54b30

My X5 3.0i gets wild (jumpy) around 1k rpm while standing still, goes above 1k up to 1200-1300 rpms and then falls down on 900ish....and also when idling SOMETIMES can't get below 900rpms....what might be the problem?

check for error codes before doing anything. There are many potential causes. If you are not able to do that we can start troubleshooting but codes should save time and likely $$$.

Yes, usually that problem can be heard on a cold start and depending on the extent of the problem, at an idle. There are several youtube videos you can listen to though you will find there are many different sounds of the same problem so it can be confusing. Bear in mind that codes can be misleading.

I would say no, but anything is possible. There was/is a "cold idle jerk" on m52tu engines, but not on m54's. BMW even released a software patch for this problem. This only happens when it's cold.... Here's my vanos thread I started when I did seals on an m52tu. Some great info on vanos in general.....

My vote is a vacuum leak, but you say you have a code, but no cel?
