remote key not working

hi,
the remote key has stopped working on my 2001 4.4 x5.
the spare doesn't work either, but hasn't worked for a long time.
i have checked the batteries, tried to re sync the keys but no luck, and checked the fuses in the glove box and boot/ trunk.
it all locks manually ( but no alarm light on the rear view mirror) and the lock button next to the handbrake works.
what else shall i try?
thanks

Check the wiring near the right side hinge of the upper tailgate. There is a yellow/white_striped wire that goes from the antenna amp to the GM5 module. The wire was broken inside the rubber boot in my X.

Although the OP said the key "stopped working"...they went on to specifically infer lock/unlock issues which would indicate that perhaps only 2 of the keys 3 features aren't working (FZV & DWA).

The OP never mentioned that the remote key didn't start the vehicle...which would be EWS. So if the keys still start the car...EWS is not the issue.

So to the OP (original poster)...what part of the keys functions aren't working?

  • EWS - immobilizing feature (allows the key to start the car)
  • FZV - central locking system (locks/unlocks the car)
  • DWA - anti-theft alarm siren system (arms/disarms the car)
All 3 features above are incorporated into the remote key. The non remote keys have EWS...and FZV/DWA is actuated when you manually lock/unlock & arm/disarm the vehicle when you use the key blade in the door lock cylinder.

So when you say "the key doesn't work"...it's not clear as to which of the 3 features of the key isn't working.

I can open the car with the key blade and start the car with both keys.
i can lock the car with the key blade, but it does not alarm the vehicle. Well the red blob doesnt flash.
i cannot unlock or lock the car with the remote

If you search "EWS" you'll find a post by me with more info than just the workings of the EWS..

I just didn't have time to look then and copy and paste the link.

Bongo, before you start spending money...have you tried the pairing procedure? It's a 10 second solution where you:
1. sit inside the car
2. Lock the doors
3. insert key, twist (one click) and take out key straight away
4. Hold the unlock button and press 3 times on the lock button.

The car will lock/unlock itself to confirm the key function.

You can also youtube this procedure, very common and plenty of videos.

Good luck
