Do a search on "snow tires", it's a pretty frequent discussion. I live in CA and only have to deal with the snow when I head up to Tahoe (8 times a year). IMO the best all-season tire is the Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico.

Also depends which rims you have. The 19 & 20 inch rims are never going to be great in the snow for full-time duty.

I live in NJ also and so far she has been superb (17"'s). When i plan on getting my 87s, i'm going to put snows on my 17s and switch in the winter.

Chip,
I have a dedicated set of 18" style 69's with Blizzak LM-22's for winter shoes. Stock Michelin's don't cut it in ice and any decent amount of snow, imho. I live in Maine and drove through slushy snow/ice today with absolutely no problem taking off, driving and , most importantly, stopping. The X5 with snows is a tank. Remember, it doesn't matter if you have six-wheel drive when you hit the brakes. It matters how well your tires can grip the ground. You'll be amazed at the difference with snows. |

snows all the way! i didn't get them for my last X5, kept on the oem 18's (mind you this was before i found X5world). it never performed that great in snow/ice (decently, but i was never confident with it). this year i wised-up w/my new X5 and got 18 pirelli snow and ice to replace my oem 20's for the winter. the best decision ever! the X tears right through the snow and stops soundly on ice. you will not regret getting snows for your X.

Put the Pirelli Zero Assimetricos on mine to replace the stock Diamaris and the difference is astounding. Put them straight on to my 19's

even when i had my 330XI i kept the OEM 17"s with snows on them for the weather up here and the frequent snowbaord trips to vermont.
snow tires over the OEM contis were a night and day diffrence i can only imagine the diffrence you will see with snows vs summer rubber. snow tires are great for stopping in snow but you cant suprise or it will slide.
