Hey, did you do the visor test? open the visor and slide the vanity mirror open and see what happens. if the light doesn't come on, but other weird things happen on the dash then it's 99% your ignition switch. easy, cheap fix.

I didn't see this.
So, I thought the indy had it fixed. I drove it over the week here and there and it was fine. I took out this am to get eggs and when I left the grocery store, the airbag light and seatbelt lights were on and the power steering was affected. As I pulled into my driveway 5 minutes later, the light like this (!) lights up in yellow on the dash and I take the groceries in. I read your post and saw some youtube videos so go back out to the X5. When I turned the key, the airbag and seatbelt light are gone but the (!) is still there and it says TRANSFAIL SAFE PROG... [EDIT] so I did the visor test, the visor lights turn on and no weird lights or electrical things occur, just the (!) on the dash. Shut car off, start it and there are no lights whatsoever. I'm leading towards the ignition switch. Going to call the indy tmw am and ask if they can cover me at all for anything and then I'll locate a new ignition switch and change it myself, and then it's going up for sale

God damn this is annoying!

So...did you still do the visor test as outlined in the videos? If not, then do it. You don't have to have all the symptoms present to do the test. If your ignition switch is failing...the visor test will usually be a catalyst to get the multiple gremlins to replicate themselves if indeed the ignition switch is failing.

Start the vehicle, then turn on as many things you can that requires the ignition to be on to operate...then reach up and pull down the passenger sun visor and then open the mirror cover. If things start turning off/on...or start moving (interior lights, steering wheel, radio, horn, seats, etc).

See edited post above. I was trying to BBQ and diagnose at the same time and rushed my post haha

So indy just called.
It appears that I must've somehow bent / damaged the cig lighter in the back of the console (for passengers to use) and this shorted my whole system. Anyways, he's got another part on order for it and i should have it back tomorrow and it SHOULD be ok, pending a test drive

As I said before, when that happened to me my ignition switch was going. It shut down on me eventually on the road while idling. It started back up, I drove it home and it shut down in the driveway. Next thing I know I was towing it to the dealer.

Follow up: I replaced the ignition switch and took it on a decent test drive. No weird lights or issues right now and hoping it stays that way

Had this same issue with an E39, I noticed that wiggling the key in the run position would resolve all or some of the failures (Radio displays, four way flashers, turn signals, etc). Rotate key off and back on and some would not appear. All Dignostics pointed to the Ign Sw.

I replaced the T/S SW in approx 1.5 on Sunday morning and all is fine now.
