Yellow,DSC,ABS AND BRAKE LIGHT ON

During the snow storm in January, I started my 2001 X5 E53 and started to drive. As soon as I started to drive, I hear this crunching sound and the three lights listed in the subject field came on. I continued to drive and the crunching sound stopped, however, I smelled something like rubber burning.

The next day, it drove fine but the three yellow lights were still on. I spoke to a few people and they told me to not worry about it.

Yesterday, I started my car and I noticed that the three light were not on. I started to drive. As soon as I made a right turn, I hear this crunching sound an the car had trouble moving as if something was stuck like something to do with the brakes are transfer case. Once I came out of the turn, the lights came back on and it drove fine.

Has anyone had this issue and is there anyway I can resolve it without going to a mechanic? I am able to perform basic to mid level mechanic work on my own.

It sounds like it is transfer case and or driveshaft related. There is a couple of other threads about the same thing just this past week. I would read through those first.

You have a fault in your DSC module. You need to find someone with the software to scan it. Could be a bad sensor or a bad module. Sounds to me like your abs/traction control is acting up, which is what that module controls.

Driveshaft is starting to slip hence the burning sound - with your miles I'm 99% sure that is the issue, especially since you said it was becoming hard to move and hearing crunching.

Park the X and get under and drop the shaft, I guarantee the splines are super worn. If you don't strip it out all the way you can get away with just an extended shaft, if it strips out completely, you'll need to rebuild the Tcase with a new output shaft as well

What you probably smell was the brakes that was activated by the ABS or DSC. When the lights came on, it's just telling you that you have a fault and the ABS or DSC was no longer going to work as designed and you should drive cautiously.

Unless you just want to throw parts at it you are better off taking it in to a mechanic.
