PARASITIC DRAW TEST SAFETY
Finally, I searched and found one solution. Use a jump box. Run the series off the negative battery terminal side. The neg cable is attached to the jump box neg and the meter neg is connected to the neg battery still in the vehicle. Is this correct? Don't want to fry my system. I am told that the draw is my MID radio unit. Just checking. Thanks, I am very new to electrical systems in the X5 -01

You don't have to wait for the car to go to sleep. Open the tailgate and use a screwdriver to operate the tailgate latch, as though closing it - this will start the shut down.
Here's how to do the battery drain test - its for the E38, but the method is the same: BMW E38 Battery Drain |

thanks, I'll try it asap. BTW, do you happen to know what the color coded wires leading to the MID radio unit represent? I am thinking of putting in a cutoff switch to the radio if in fact it is shorted and causing the constant draw; as I have been told.

Couldn't get it to work. Tried a sleep test, but it never went to sleep after the meter was series into the circuit. I had a 4.35 amp draw, but then that wasn't real. It looks like it is the radio MID> When it was put back in the screen flickered and not LED info came up for awhile. Did you know the MID has to be snapped in or it doesn't work. It turns out the radio unit grounds off the metal tabs on the dash. Weird.
