Whistling Dixxie
So I was wondering if anyone has had the issue with a constant whistling sound from the engine? A high pitched whistle that follows the revs of the engine. I checked my tailpipe and no one left me a gift there so it's definitely coming from the engine. I had my shop smoke the engine to look for leaks anywhere and there wasn't a single leak found after a long time too. Just wondering if anyone has experienced this before? Adding this YouTube link for future reference. This is exactly the whistling sound my X5 is making. There are lot of different whistling and whining noises on YouTube but this one is pretty much spot-on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVfsJvW3yuo B

Good day!
Can you hear it really well with the hood up, trans in park? Your tech should be able to isolate the source within a short time! I would suspect an intake leak, dirty air filter, or a small vac leak... Good luck! Cheers!

I should have done the search for "whistling noise" before I posted. This appears to be a common issue but caused by various things.
So far, everything I have read I have already replaced on my truck. The intake boot, the CCV, rebuilt DISA valve, Cam cover gasket, etc. The problem is that it is so damn hard to isolate. Someone needs to bring the idle up enough for me to hear it and then outside, in the engine bay, there are so many other noises at that point it makes it even more difficult to isolate. I even tried using my engine stethoscope with the tip pulled out so I could point the open tube around and try to locate it but nope, it's a head scratcher. That's why I ended up getting my buddies to smoke the engine to see if I could find a leak somewhere. Nothing, nada. I guess it will be one of those eureka moments that I come to whereby other forum members may be able to benefit. Had one of those last week with my Jag XJ6 that the auto doorlocks had jammed in the locked position with no way of opening the door. Others had experienced the same thing and were dumbfounded how to get the door open. After all, how do you get the door panel off with the door stuck closed right? Anyway, figured out how to do it and got a lot of pats on the back for that one. Maybe I will get this one as well. Cheers Bernie

That would be weird as I would think I could isolate that stuff pretty quickly being right there at the front. Been wrong before so time to check again

Did some youtube digging and although there are quite a few noises on there referring to whistling sounds, the below link is pretty much identical to the noise I hear. Follows engine RPM perfectly

Went out this morning to see if I could isolate it again with my stethoscope end tube.
Sure as hell sounds like it is coming from the front and I am willing to bet that it is the alternator that causes this whistle. Over the weekend I am hauling its ass into the garage to do a bunch of work on it so I will confirm then. B

Yep, pull the belt before tearing into your maintenence items and start it... no whistle means it's one of these round things driven by the belt....
Cheers!
