Instrument cluster

So..............I been on a tear of later with getting thing repaired on the 4.8is.
I went to Alpine Auto to have my LCD screen replaced and that went great,but.......I ask Jimmy about my instrument cluster dead pixels and He said sure I can replace it for $100 and He keeps my old one ,I said Okay , BIG MISTAKE, I drove down the road thinking I was all good, BUT the hazard warning come on and I thought I had a code , I check with the scanner ,No code, I looked that the miles and I had 11k miles[there is the problem],so now I have to get a new cluster and code it too.
Any experiences with this ?

Did you post on the Facebook group?

As you have found out, you cannot just swap clusters. There are multiple cross checks in the system to prevent tampering. You may be able to reprogram that cluster, I don't know. I do know that you can just repair the dead pixels in your original cluster.

But now, assuming you have driven it, may still have a tamper dot as the mileage on your original cluster will no longer match the other security modules (I think LCM and DME).

I remember reading the threshold is200/250 miles for odometer tamper light.

My suggestion is to swap back and see first.

Go get your original instrument cluster back.

You can drive up to 120 miles or 200 kilometers without have a fault (see datapoint #5 in the info below)...and as long as the 3 major things listed in the info below match...the LCM & IKE will communicate with each other and update.

If you've driven past the mileage requirements listed in the datapoint below that mentions it...then there will be a fault code "stored" but it doesn't prevent the components from communicating.

ALL 6 datapoints in the info below must be met when swapping LCMs or IKE (instrument clusters). If you have the software/hardware to ZERO the mileage and overwrite the VIN to used or new modules...then you're cooking with gas.

A BMW dealership does not have the software/hardware to install a USED IKE or LCM...they can only install new, or officially remanufactured/refurbished...which prevents dealerships from being tempted to do odometer roll backs.

So I have 120 miles to re-install the old IKE to the DME , the DME undates to the IKE every 60 miles, I am not driving the car until I am going to get it done.............
