I hate to say it but this is exacty what my brothers 4.8is is doing and it is indeed the valve guide seals. That said he has had good luck using some high mileage oil options that have swollen the seals a bit and made the smoke quantity more reasonable.

Should I even bother doing a smog check with this situation?

or run the additives first?

anybody fail smog due to bad valve seals?

I think he passed smog here in Reno but that's all OBDII based. He's on the forum as well, I'd ping him on the smog and oil. His username is BMW_tuner

Do you guys mind sharing some formulas for oil/additives/cleaners that you've used with success?

I'm thinking if I can adequately de-gunk the engine and rejuvenate the seals, then that will buy some time before $$$ repairs.
