x5 4.6 is DIY timing job failure please help

Hi Everyone,
I decided to give it a try and do the timing overhaul on my failed timing guide rails.The plastic cracked after 154000 miles.So i replaced all 3 rails new chain gaskets and etc.I set the timing on cam shafts using the tool . and every time i was removing the blocking tool and spinning the crank shaft to test if everything was ok, one of the shafts (i think it was the intake) was slipping off ,and making click sound ,and timing was off again.I set the block again released and retorqued the bolts but it kept slipping off every time i was testing the timing . i was told it's the oil preasuure that will hold it back into place ,so i put back the engine .Tried to start, it was cranking but no starting, played with airmass sensor wires it started roughly and start making a rumbling/ clinging noise .And Of course codes came out Camshaft sensor position 1-4.5-8, air mass sensor ,throttle position sensors.
I put some videos on youtube if smb can take a look and put me in the right direction .
I Would Greatly appreciate the help, i know it's not an easy DIY but couple mechanics i talked to were complaining that it would take them 30 hours they are busy,i decided to give it a try myself.

I hope this doesn't sound to harsh, but don't run that motor anymore. There is something major wrong with it. You need to really review the timing procedure and start over. Was the motor making any noises before this? Other than the usual bad guide noise? I couldn't tell from your cryptic description of what was happening, but if it is like the 4.4 motor, the intake on bank 1 will snap over once you remove the timing blocks, but that doesn't matter since you are checking the timing disc with the blocks on. You may be over your head here. Maybe tow it to someone who knows how to time them and that won't take as long. But, still some labor involved. Keep us posted, but don't run it anymore

Just watched the first video, the cam is operating properly. I think your VANOS is messed up or your timing is just f'd. You need to go to Besian site, follow his directions explicitly and see how it goes.

It was not making any noises before,exept the noise of the bad guide rails,i could hear the chain running on the metal .
Could that be a Hydraulic valve lifter?That click sound on the 1st video when a turn the cam seems coming right underneath

Doesn't sound like a lifter (valve lash adjuster in BMW speak) to me.

Think you have to go over it all again.

No way is that a cam follower. That engine is not timed correctly - valve timing is off.

Gonna have to go back and re-time the engine at a minimum.

I did the timing all over again, and everything is solved now.

Now I have another problem.
Turned on the engine and it went to engine fail safe mode,i checked it with my peak R5/FCX-3
scanner tools, the following faults came out
1.drive -by -wire throttle position monitoring
2.drive by wire throttle controller,lower adaptation
3. air mass sensor comes and goes.
I cleaned the air mass sensor and throttle Body.
Cleared the codes. But still the the the top two codes are still there and engine is still in fail safe programming mode.
Any suggestions

Are you sure everything is hooked up correctly and all ground wires are back in place? Start with the simple often overlooked items. Strange that its throwing the vehicle in failsafe mode while idling. Unhook the battery at the back of the vehicle both negative and positive. Then follow the link for resetting the ECU (3 post down on link)

- disconnect the ground/earth/(-) cable from the battery
- disconnect the positive (+) cable from the battery
- short the battery cable together for at least 10 minutes
- reconnect the positive (+) cable to the battery
- reconnect the ground/earth/(-) cable to the battery
- reset the clock
