I'm guessing most shops do use an impact wrench because it is quicker.

I'm with RB.

NOBODY has touched my X since I bought it (even fueling). 6 yrs running.

Wheels/tires are brought to tire installer (Classic BMW).

A vehicle is no better then the lamest tech that has worked on it.

Already got the used bolts in the mail today. No rust, so I guess they are already better than what I have. Definitely some wrench wear on them, but the powder coater guy said they would clean them and then blast them down to a metal surface. I didn't realize they have a movable cone on them, but no need to coat those. The threads look fine...

^Yep the E53 bolts are sort of special, moveable cone and super short threads (19mm or so IIRC) - i'm sure the powdercoating will come out great - I'm actually considering it myself so I can take the plastic bolt covers off and be able to get dirt out of the lug hole crevices easier

Got the bolts back from Pro Kote Indy today - they turned out great! They coated the movable cones also, so they aren't really movable any more.

Here are the 'after' pics:

Nice! How much did it cost? I inquired from a local powder coating firm and they said nada, will be too thick to fit

I always wondered what purpose the moveable cones were on the lug bolts - this car is the only one I know that has them

Stops the twisting force tearing up the alloy wheels (or the finish on the wheels). The cone sits in the socket on the wheel and the bolt turns inside the cone when torquing it up.

That's the theory anyway...
