Putting a generic fan such as a Spal will not work on our BMW. The DME controls the BMW fan, whereas a Spal fan or any other non BMW fan will not be controlled by the DME. If the DME doesn't receive a signal from the fan, it will assume the fan is not working. It will not send a signal to the ac compressor to turn on.
If you are putting a fan on because your BMW didn't come with an Aux fan that is a different issue.

Here's a DIY guide if you're replacing your bad auxiliary fan. I bought the very affordable TYC unit on Amazon for $161 and it's working great.

Aux Fan
I just bought the same fan on partsgeek.com for $189 and it seems to good quality and works great.
