Whistle No sound from rear door speakers?

Before I start climbing into the wiring etc. looking for why I have no audio on the rear door speakers, has anyone got any ideas as to what could cause both rear speakers to fail.

I have the standard audio system (6-speaker, with MID, Pro CD and 6 CD changer). No mods - that I know of.

Not sure if they went out together or separately - I rarely listen to music in the car (if I ever get a Dynavin it'll be for the GPS!) and only recently noticed the lack of rear sound. Have checked the fader settings - in fact setting the fader to full rear delivers no sound at all. Same for any source. Fader at centre or full front works fine - on front four speakers anyway.

I'll start by check for signal at the wiring in the door speakers and at the source - connector X18805 - if I can find it; it can be in the rear or under the dash.

Very odd...

Here's a thought... knowing that BMW has had issues with flexible harnesses ie. Trunk, hatch... it may hint at cracked or broken wires in the door to body loom, inside the boot. Pull back the rubber door boot and inspect?

Thanks - I've considered that as a possible issue but all the locks and lights work fine in both doors and only the speakers DON'T work in both doors. While broken wires are possibility, it seems unlikely.

Will check though, when I check the plug and socket in there...

Depends on how many times you cycle opening and closing your back doors.

If your X is a kid Taxi and they get opened and closed a ton - then more likely than you may think. One could have gone out, unnoticed - and now the 2nd one bit it?

If it's just you driving all the time, and the other 3 doors never get used, then yeah, probably not.

I shouldn't be so quick to dismiss the chance of a coincidence! My son's VW Golf had an airbag light after he did some dash work. We reset the code but it came back. Rechecked all the dash work - nothing. Rechecked the code and found it was a code for a driver's door crash sensor failure. Checked the loom at the hinge - carnage.

Like this...

Will look at the looms on my X5 when it stops raining...

Oh yeah, before anyone asks, I did search - and found lots of folk with similar issues. Not real answers though, except that in many cases it was connections - either corroded plugs/sockets or broken wires on the speakers.

In I go...

Could be that, in my case I had no power. Only sound to 1 rear door. Check out the harness.

Update: Chased this fault today and had to start with finding connector X18805. It wasn't in the usual places (near the battery or in the left-side rear quarter well) but on the back of the Professional CD in the dash! Who knew..?

Anywho.... measured the wiring. FL is 18 ohms (too high), RL is open (rats), FR is 4 ohms (good) and RR is 6 ohms (also good). Plugged it back up and I now have four working speakers out of six. Will chase the two missing door speakers (both left side door speakers aren't working)....

futher update

Finally got around to checking the door looms etc. Removed the battery connections first, as I don't want to be dealing with SRS issues.

Left A pillar connector contacts (in X257) looked a little corroded, but the speaker measured OK with a meter (from X57 pins 28 & 29) so I cleaned them up with some contact cleaner/lube and put it all back together.

Left B pillar connector connection (in X273) looked ok but the speaker appears to be open circuit (X273 pins 28 & 29). Drat. Cleaned/lubed connections and closed this up too.

Re-powered the car and tested the audio and I now have 5 of 6 speakers working. The missing speaker - left rear - is either a dead speaker or a disconnection at the speaker plug (X10248). I'll have to pull the door card/liner to check this.

Another day - I'm done for now.
