S of a B!!! Cracked a wheel

My summer is sucking balls!!! In May the timing chain tensioner in my wife's Audi A4 failed. Yep, worst case scenario. Pistons banging into valves and engine being rebuilt. In fact, as of yesterday her car has been in the shop for 2 months. I still have no idea what that bill is going to be but I expect it to be in the $3500-$5000 range. Hopefully the pending class action lawsuit against Audi comes through and I get reimbursed.

So while her car has been in the shop, she is using the X5 and I'm using my M3 as a daily driver which sucks because I've gotten a couple good rock chips in the hood and a chip in the wind shield too.

So the other day I notice the right front tire on the X5 is low. I just put new Contis on in May so I figured she must have caught a nail in the tire. I make an appointment at the tire shop for the repair and come back an hour after dropping it off to hear the service technician say "I've got bad news." So I figure the nail is in the sidewall and I need a new tire. Nope. The wheel is cracked. The technician says "you'll need to call BMW and order a new wheel." Unfortunately not that easy. I bought these wheels on Craigslist and they are aftermarket. There are plenty of wheels that look similar but I'm not about to have 1 wheel that is slightly different that the rest. So now I'm spending another $800 for a set of wheels, then having to spend however much to have the 4 tires switched over to the new wheels.

With out question, this will be the most money I've spent in a summer on car repairs.

I can feel with you: just had this on my rear 168s, 1000€ for just the 2 rims...

But at least you may sell the 3 good ones and make some money...

Damn that sucks, sorry to hear that!

Are those 19" wheels? Those have thick sidewalls and hard to imagine killing a wheel with those tires.

I remember reading somewhere that the X is kinda porky so you have to check wheel's weight capacity, as a lot of wheels are made to fit 3's and 5's which weigh a lot less?

It's been a while since I read about that, just tossing it out there.

According to my information these cracks are a result of: the weight of the car + bad roads/tracks (potholes) + too much speed

@WPHD: maybe there is a chance to find the manufacturer of the rims and to get a new or slightly used one on ebay?

I searched and searched eBay, Craigslist, forums etc. There isn't a brand name on the wheel so like I said earlier, I'm not going to buy a wheel that is close but slightly different.

Also, I'm not allowed to post in the classifieds, but once I have my new wheels mounted, I'll have 3 19s up for grabs. Possibly with 3 month old tires (might just upgrade to 20s right away.)

Most rims can be repaired for a lot less than a new set of rims. If you live in a metropolitan area you should be able to find a wheel shop that can repair the crack.

Here's a video on how aluminum rims are repaired.

Here's a shop that you can contact to and see if they can repair your rim.

At least here in germany its not allowed to repair cracked rims for safety reasons...

Don't know if its worth 200 $ and maybe risk a major accident - perhaps I'm a bit to cautious
In my opinion: wheels and brakes are parts where I won't force saving the last $

Yeah, it's not legal in the state of Wisconsin to repair cracked wheels. I'm complaining about spending the money, but saving some money and risking my families safety doesn't make sense to me.
