Blower works intermittently.

Help!

The blower on my 2001 X5 3.0D will work fine for a few minutes and then it will cut out. It then starts again after a while only to cut out again later. Oddly, it sometimes seems to kick in when I open and close a window.

I have this problem both when using air con (which is nicely cold when working) and when using the heater so I suspect it's not related to temperature.

I've not checked much as yet but with the temperature hitting close to 30, it's time to get it sorted.

Anyone have any ideas?

Check your final stage resistor which is located on the upper right hand side of the centre hump in the interior (for right hand drive - left of pedals). There are plenty of write ups about it. I recently had troubles with my E39 (same setup) and I bought a new final stage resistor only to discover that the plug/socket connectors were dirty and unplugging/plugging in a few times fixed the problem. If yours is intermittent it may only be dirty contacts.

I did a search but my HVAC was completely dead and found all signs were FSR as well. Coincidentally I had a regular draw on the battery that would drain it enough that the tender could barely keep up never turning green. Once replaced everything works and tender keeps it charged. 2 issues solved.

It does require some twisting and turning to get up there but theres lots of stuff on internet how to locate and replace and its such a prolific point of failure on these and e39's that most dealers stock multiples.

Good luck
