New to the X5 family but Bimmer owner for years

Hi Everyone,

2001 X5 4.4 -Sport, 232k and climbing.

Thanks for being such a great source of details. My question has to do with the ultimate Transmission of the X5.
I have read MANY threads this weekend but I can't seem to find the answer to my challenge.
When I purchased the X5, I drove it twice and even shifted through the steptronic with ease. The trifecta of lights did come on but then off but now are on full-time, which I do believe is the ABS module and will have it rebuilt. Now I can't shift out of 4 up or down, its stuck in 4th when in steptronic but regular "D" mode all is fine, I do have the small thump when starting from the stoplights but if I roll a little there's no thump.
So why can't I get out of 4th, will this happen if the Trifecta lights are on?? I am having my Trans fluid checked today but I'm just stumped on this one, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Jeff

When a transmission goes into trans fail mode, it put the trans in limp mode so that you can drive it to the dealer to trade the car in.

Ok, quick update. The trans is fine just the shifter is out of sync. Where the shift link connects to the handle the small gray plastic grommet is broken allowing the shifter to move slightly on its own, allowing the gear to seem not in the position??

Can I use a "used" one from all the x5 e53 models 2000-2006? I did find a recall(2001) for this but the dealership hasn't called back yet. If I can fix it I just need to know what years I can use to fix this (shift knob, gear selector unit), I have found many for sale but not sure if they will work.

Trade in mode lol!

OP, the 4.4's changed drivetrain during the 2004 facelift - M62 to N62 engines and 5 speed ZF to 6 speed ZF's for the tranny.

That's just a long winded way to say I have no idea, but do check. Realoem is a great starting point for that.

Here's a link to shifter parts. I entered 4/2001 as your manufacturing date, you should change that. Check the part number for your date of mfg and then check against the parts you find for sale so you know whether or not it is the same part number.

Thanks bcredliner,

this is very helpful. The diagram show the whole shifting unit, wonder if there is a way to get the small parts of the main unit. Like the small plastic grommet that holds the shift linkage "circle" end, that is the part that is broken allowing "play" in the shifter which is not allowing it to see 5th gear.

The parts listed on the realoem site are those as offered by BMW. I don't of an aftermarket source for shifter parts but might be worth a search.
