repair estimate

i have a leak which i believe is the rear main and it's already been replaced. if it is the rear main again around how much is the repair job? previous owner, my gramps, had it done at his old job so i have no clue on the cost.

The rear main seal is one of those $20 parts that cost over $1000 in labor if you don't DIY.

The list of items to R&R....

Front splash shield
Subframe stiffener plate/swaybar
Center exhaust section
Exhaust heat shields
Driveshafts
TC case/crossmember
Trans wiring harness/linkage
Transmission

Probably 1-1500. That is one of the crappiest seals to have leak.

If it was already replaced recently (like under 100k miles ago) then you should also ask why it failed.

Good luck!

Most every knowledgeable BMW mechanic with a lift/trans jack/proper tools already has more "friends" then they'll ever need.

it has 97k not sure exactly when it was replaced though, within the last 15k i believe. i'm sure it failed because it wasn't done right even though it was a friend of his. i do remember a leak began months later.

Sure hope that the crankshaft end is not nicked from when the seal was first trying to be replaced. If so even with another seal may continue leaking.
