The rear main seal is one of those $20 parts that cost over $1000 in labor if you don't DIY.

Probably 1-1500. That is one of the crappiest seals to have leak.

well that's a joke so i'm either holding off or going to befriend a mechanic lol. i might as well get it diagnosed first so i know for fact it's leaking again. thanks

If it was already replaced recently (like under 100k miles ago) then you should also ask why it failed.

Good luck!Most every knowledgeable BMW mechanic with a lift/trans jack/proper tools already has more "friends" then they'll ever need.

it has 97k not sure exactly when it was replaced though, within the last 15k i believe. i'm sure it failed because it wasn't done right even though it was a friend of his. i do remember a leak began months later.

Sure hope that the crankshaft end is not nicked from when the seal was first trying to be replaced. If so even with another seal may continue leaking.
