Behr fan clutches suck!!!

Maybe.

I've been noticing a steady rise in operating temp on the 3.0. The usual 92 deg has become 96 degs with peaks of 97 degs. Absolute highest I used to see was 96 degs.

Temps go down on the highway.

So I got a new Behr clutch. German made, not Chinese.

I'll be darned if temp peaks are higher, I am seeing 97-99 degs.

Temps were down some of the time, but on the average temps are worse after the new clutch!

It's like the Behr clutch is only working sometimes.

Cooling system

How many miles are on the vehicle? When is the last time you serviced the coolant? Does the car run even hotter with the AC on?

64k miles. Coolant is maybe 2 years old. Temps are a bit hotter with AC as expected, pusher fan is confirmed working though.

It points to the clutch for me as literally the only thing I changed was the clutch. Temps were acceptable before the clutch change, but right after I started seeing 98-99 deg peaks.

Last time I saw temps like those was when my pusher fan died.

Thing is, you would never notice if you didnt monitor temps on the OBC as the car runs no differently and AC is fine. But having monitored running temps since I got the car, I dont like the temp characteristics of the Behr fan.

Cn, yeah, I think i will go pick up a Sachs.

I had a Sachs before this and temps were low and pretty linear. Same on the 4.6. 100-109 degs and would only go up or down with load, but always in a linear way.

The Behr seems to have no rhyme or reason to its engagement by comparison.

Fan

At what temp is the fan clutch locking up. Also what temp is the pusher fan coming on. Does the defrost work good and is there a fault code for the thermostat. Sometimes the water valve solenoid is faulty and causes the car to run higher temps.

Fan clutch

Does the Behr have a coil spring or is it like the factory style fan clutch? The coil spring style make the car sound like a jet engine and seem to be locked all the time. While the factory style work much better and cost a lot more.

I spent the extra money for the Sachs on mine and it works great other than a little stiff when cold causing a bit of fan noise for the first few minutes after start up.

Autobahn, I believe spec for the pusher fan is low speed at 92 degs, high speed at 98 degs.

I can't say yet what temp the clutch locks up because sometimes because my fluctuations dont seem consistent. Not like with the old Sachs fan.

Both the Sachs and Behr are strip type.

No thermostat fault. I have a fault for the auxiliary water pump though and no heat though. I was just about to post if it could affect my temps.

However, Ive had that fault for a while and literally the only thing I changed was the clutch and now I am getting 99 deg temps when I never had them before.
