4.8is cluster in 3.0

Hey All, I have the opportunity to pickup a 4.8is cluster for under $100. If I purchased it, I'd recode it to work on my 2004 3.0 with PAsoft. My question is could I get the oil temp gauge and LED's to work? I've looked on the oil filter housing and I seem to have an oil temp sensor. There are two sensors on the oil filter housing, one pressure sensor that activates the idiot light, and another that seems to be a temp sensor. Let me know what you guys think.

You also have to code the cluster not sure if its done with PA soft -

Does your current cluster need pixel repair? If so, you can do pixel repair, add grey faces, and paint needles red and add some rings for the same price, and no coding needed

It doesn't need repair. I just have a thing for that oil temp needle and LED's

Same here, I've been asking bmw540san about it ever since I saw his picture of it. Just looks too good.

I don't think you can override mileage on cluster with PA Soft.

Installing the M clusters into non M vehicles can be done, and done successfully with the lights working...but its not easy.

There's a forum member that does this conversion...his name is Blackknight 530i. See the link below which is a thread about the M5 cluster conversion. He'd be a person to seek out about this...and if you read through the multple page thread...no doubt you'll pick up even more info that intimates what it takes to get a full functioning M5 cluster to work in a non M BMW.

If you have the low cluster and low MID...installing a high cluster will take even more things to accomplish...you'll need a high MID or Nav to go with the M cluster (which is a high cluster)

Thanks for the info Q! Yes I do have a high cluster and nav, so that should make things easier. As for the mileage, the new cluster has less miles than the car. So in theory, If I update the VIN with PA Soft, the mileage should cary over from the LCM after the 60 mile period. Does that sound right?

No...that's not quite all that is needed.

There are six data points that explains the redundant data shared between the IKE (instrument cluster electronics) and the LCM (light check module).

Writing the VIN to the module may keep the odometer tamper dot from illuminating (see data point #1 below)...but it will require zeroing out the mileage if you want the LCM to communicate with the new IKE and accept the vehicle's official mileage data.

Data points #2, #3 discusses how the module requires that the mileage has to be zeroed in order for communication between the IKE & LCM to occur. So you will need aftermarket software/hardware that can perform this function, too...and it will need to be done to even write a new VIN to the IKE.

The swap is definitely possible, there are some people who have done this already here in germany - but it requires serious coding skills to get the oil temp working.
As with every used cluster: you have to clear the cluster to the state "new" - like it left the factory (uninitialised) which is not as easy if you are not familar with electronics (you need additional hardware and reprogram an EEPROM afaik). Otherwise you will at least get the "manipulation point" if your car's mileage is less than the one in the M cluster. Simply swapping is therefore not advisable...

@Qsilver: HIGH cluster without MID/NAV would work without problems: the MID/NAV is only a dumb "display" with some buttons, no further functionality involved - though you will be unable to use some of the HIGH BC functionality and aux heating and ventilation...
