Amp shorted out

Last big rainstorm and a small leak around tailgate bump stop = shorted out amp. I've got no sound.

Anyone have suggestions?


Are used amps available as replacement?


If I could find a used replacement, is it possible to code it to my specific X5?


Head unit was replaced a few years ago under warranty but XM /Sirius module broke and wasn't covered. Speakers are stock, navigation works fine.


$2k for a new one doesn't make sense.


'06 4.8is, blk/blk and she's in great shape.


105k miles and I'd like to keep her, it's a great SUV but the costs not covered by extended warranty continue to stack up.

Do you have DSP or Hi-FI stereo? DSP amp will generally be more expensive. If you have just HI-FI you can generally replace it with an aftermarket amp.

You can take the amp out and send it in for repair for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Used one can found on eBay. The local pick n pull had a X5 with a 4.4. Watched as a couple of people yanked out the engine and trans when I was look for a front caliper for my X. They may still have the amp, but with all the rain we had last week it is probably also bad. You can check craigslist and see if anyone is stripping a X in your area.

I believe the DSP amps are shared with the e38 & e39. So you could use one of those...but they would need to be coded to get the best sound. The DSP amps are coded for each model based on its interior dimensions and speaker set-up. So though it will work in any of the models listed (e38/e39/e53)...the system's speakers can have a muddled sound if the DSP amp isn't coded for the correct vehicle.

If you're referring to an install of a DSP amp out of an e38 or e39 into an e53 (or vice/vice/versa)...then no. It's not the EQ frequencies that is causing the muddied sound...and EQ frequency adjustments or ROOM/ECHO adjustments will not clear up the muddy/muddled sound. It is still "listenable"...but a true audiophile will be able to tell that something is not quite right (unless you only listen to AM talk radio/NPR talk radio ).

At least, that's how it was when I replaced the DSP amp in my e39 Touring. I believe the amp came out of an e38...and the amp worked with a simple plug-n-play...but the sound was a mirky/muddy sound until coded.

Awaiting delivery of replacement unit along with a Sirius box which stopped working last year. Hopefully everything just swaps out and I'll be back with tunes.
