Need a rear differential 4.8...

Apparently it blew and the drive shaft is just spinning. I need to find a replacement so I can get this one apart and fixed.

Where to look, what others will work for this with the 4.8?

You need to get one out of another 4.8. All of the differentials from E53 physically swap (you have to use the output shafts that go with the diff you want to use; they are all different) but each engine has a different diff ratio.

If you really wanted to use one from another engined e53 (say a 3.0 with 4.10 ratio) then you need to change BOTH differentials-front and back, because they are both the same ratio, and running mismatched dif ratios is...ill advised.

I don't know if 4.8s can suffer from stripped front driveshaft spline syndrome, but if they can, you might check that first before you give up on the diff.

Have you rebuilt a diff before?

Many specialized tools required (like travel indicators/mag bases, for setting hypoid gear backlash), shim sets in assorted sizes (to set side play clearance), single use crush washers.......

It seems like your initial post is stating the failed unit has not been opened/inspected, there might be NO usable parts.

A salvage yard diff assembly swap might be your best option.

Or.......

Yes, need to get it back on the road, so I want a replacement first then take my time with a rebuild.

I work at a machine builder company and we have all the appropriate tools. Actually built a differential assembly system and know about the shim thicknesses and backlash. Even have machinery that checks backlash for diffs

Good to hear.

Check local recycle yards and Craigslist for part-out 4.8is E53s, these usually run in the 300 to 500 dollar range.

I've rebuilt a few Dana 44 Viper diffs, very tedious assemble/measure/disassemble/shim/re-assemble/re-measure task. Sometimes two or 3 processes to get correct.

You track a Viper? Have a girlfriend that tracks with us at Watkins Glen in her '13 GTS SRT. Those things are fun to drive, but a little tight for a big guy like me to fit into.. powerful beast, understand why the diffs can be killed...

No tracking the Vipers or ZR-1 in the last few years, Did lots of track days in Florida/Georgia.

My sister (ex-treasurer of the NJ chapter of Porsche club) her husband track at the Glen regularly.

How in the world did this open diff just blow? It shouldn't be difficult finding a replacement from the junk yard.
