Thanks. I ended up using a 10-32 (after the 8-32 stripped).
I didn't do the second one yet but plan to take apart without drilling out the rivet. I will make a new thread with step by step photos.

So i've reduced this repair to not even needing to cut slots with a dremel, only one 'axle nut' is destroyed and needs to be replaced; the first two i just made my own 'circlip' solution with a washer and some wire, but the third one, i stole the axle nut from the door handle carrier on the same door that i removed to reinforce against breaking.
