Time to say goodbye...

Well, the time has come to move on. I traded in my 2004 4.8is and have gotten a 2013 Mini Cooper with a 6 speed manual. The 4.8 had 246k and the tranny was beginning to slip.
Thanks to Xoutpost and the forum members who helped me make her last as long as she did. She was super fun to drive and show off but, its time to move on. BTW...Mini's are fun to drive!!

So, farewell and good luck to all.

Best,

Jason

Wow!

From a Monster to a Mini!

If you don't mind me asking.....How much did you traded the X5 for?

And enjoy your new ride!

Big J,

Your 4.8 is on Manheim, set to be auctioned off this morning! MMR on it (estimated value) is $1700. Damn man. Sad to see it go like that.

Fixing a slipping tranny would cost more than what the value of the truck is worth. I'm a DIYer and have done a complete body off restoration on one of my Lotus, but even I wouldn't undertake a tranny swap on our X5. So if you want to make a small fortune in fixing X5s, start with a Large Fortune.

I have to disagree. The 6HP26 is pretty solid and can be saved unless you drive it to total failure. Slipping can usually be fixed with 2 consecutive fluid changes, filter, gaskets, and most importantly new solenoids for the valve body. The N62 engine is equally solid. Leaks like crazy but if you change your seals it can last forever. This car, even with 240k miles could have been restored for not much money for a DIY guy.

Agree
But as mention most people just see the trans replacement bill and off she goes to the lowest bidder.

I can certainly relate to all of this. I too had to part with a lovely '01 4.4i within the last 2 weeks. It was a beast, but when the dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree I let go of the rope. The dealer gave me a disturbingly low ball number. He said it was because I "a lot of miles" on it... 149k. It was a sad day, but I know my DIY skills are diminishing - so I let her go...

... and before I forget. Big shout outs to all the members of this forum who have helped me keep my ole' '01 functioning at the top of her game. The window regulators, the water pumps, the wheel bearings, the prop shafts, the door handles, and on and on and on. Thank you all very much.
