I've been wondering about my VANOS lately as well since I've noticed a rougher idle the past 10K miles and it seems the A/C compressor is creating a more noticeable drain on engine performance. Mine has never been serviced so, it might be time.

I am driving the car today , WOW what a difference, very strong low end torque and tranny is shifting nice and easy.
BMW is never finished as there's always something else lurking around the corner waiting to snatch money out of your wallet.

At 312k I would not feel bad about replacing any still-original part

Eserv.

OT, but it looks like you were using Mspec.
I've never been there but from everything I've heard, they are a solid bunch ?

Let me tell you about my experience changing engine mounts there. Tech forgot to put O ring on the oil dip stick tube so I almost lost my engine because nearly most of oil leaked out. Lucky for me my job is very close to my house and I check under the car before each drive. They fixed the issue without arguing over it. The other day I took underbelly cover off and found a flashlight there from their shop. I wouldn't use them again for anything.

Also, did you just change the solenoid or the piston as well? Did the solenoid come with a new O ring?

Thanks!
