tire shop will not install blizzaks on my 05 E53

I drive 05 X5 4.4 standard. Tire shop tells me that they wouldnt be able to sell me blizzak DM-V2 because they are rated "T" whereas BMW recommends "v"..

He said he could mount them if I brought him the wheels not mounted on the car.

is speed matching important?

thanks in anticipation

Speed rating is the MOST important issue when choosing tires.

If the shop were to install a lower speed rating, and a high speed tire failure were to follow, a lawsuit could be filed (and won easily).

Unless you are taking it to the track (on snow tires) i would't think you could consistently exceed the rating of 118 mph in the usa where 75 is pretty much the highest speed limit excepting Montana.

When renting cars in Germany with snow tires it will have a sticker on the wind screen saying 190 kph max.

I wouldn't put blizzaks on my car either but that is a different discussion. Anyway, you need a better tire shop.

T rating is good for 118 mph. You planning on going faster than that with snow tires? I would find a new shop. I used to run V rated snow tires on my 545i. They are more like all season tires. If you want a real snow tire you have to have a lower speed rating.

I have these monster mud tires on my 4.6is. Came with them. Trust me, they are not V rated at all.

I would argue load rating is much more important that speed rating. T is more than fine. to echo others, how often are you go anywhere near 118mph? I have Q rated snow tires on my E30 (99mph). Typically the more aggressive of the snow tires the lower the speed rating.

But if you want to get picky and follow the speed ratings, I have these latitude Alpins which are V rated (not that I can go anywhere near 140 as my roof rack will fall apart)

Speed is not an issue for me. Would definitely be driving that fast. The guy told me that it is not just the speed that is an issue. He said handling can be compromised as well. this got me confused and hence posted here.

Trix5 -why dont you like blizzaks?

thanks everyone!

Go to a different shop and get on with it lol. I'm sure first one wouldn't give 2 shi**, as long as you paid them for it.

It definitely won't handle as well with winter tires as it would with summer tires.... on dry warm pavement... where snow tires are not designed for. They are designed for use in snow and with that said they will handle far better it those conditions then all seasons or summer tires. I can almost understand where the shop is coming from because people in this country are law suit happy morons with lawyers searching for a quick way to make money, I just wish common sense could be a thing now.

I am also curious as to why you wouldn't put Blizzaks on TriX5?

Blizzaks are the way to go (although there are lots of different models now) if you want good winter tires and still have some handling. I just put some on my wife's X3 after not using them after many years (e30 the second winter after I bought it) and am now kicking myself for putting something else on the X5!

I understand snow tires wont handle as good. This guy was saying that tires with lower speed rating have relatively weaker side wall. I am not sure if he knew what he was talking about but definitely got me confused.

they do have performance winter tires for dry winter weather but those dont well on snow and ice. Blizzak LM-80 is an example
