I suggest that you look at the tire inflation chart on your driver's door or in your owners manual. BMW gives recommended tire sizes and ratings...not only for summer or all season tires...but for winter (M & S aka mud & snow)...and the recommendation is NOT for V rated tires.

Blizzaks are fine...my preference has been 18" Michelin Latitude X-Ice xi2 winter tires...& they have performed greater than my wildest expectations. I suggest another store...the one you went to is to dumb to deal with...find a more competent vendor.

From owners manual:

Most US retail tire chains will not install tires that have a lower speed rating then vehicle top speed.

Thank the "I'm not responsible for my own actions" attitude of US inhabitants who file lawsuits for their own reckless actions. Corp Liability Lawyers drive this "no lower speed rating tires installed" policy.

Some here are posting how they would never drive that fast on snows, what about valets/family members/friends/repair techs. Just because YOU wouldn't do it is NO indication that the vehicle will never do it (with another driver).

I imagine tire shop could put "do not drive over XXX mph" right above "re-torque lug nuts after XXX miles"

In Europe the TUV requires a tire speed rating sticker be applied to the speedometer display when lower rated tires are installed.

This link discusses what the tire shop mentioned about lower speed rating tire dynamics......

The dealer will sell and mount non V rated snow tires. After all, they are snow tires with a reduced amount of performance implied. The work order will note that the tires are not V rated and will have compromises. When I bought my M3 new back in 1997, dealer here in snow country pushed snow tires since AWD was not an option on anything at that time with BMW. None of these tires were V rated.

Discount tire will have you sign something that states you are aware you are mounting a non OE tire.

I think it's due more to the Liars aka Lawyers that this country has become so litigious.

I see the Liars' advertisments on TV all the time "If you or a love one has taken..... or have died....or had a hip inplant.....you may be entitled to sue for damages, pain and suffering....blah..blah..blah.

Instead of chasing ambulances like in the old days they just use TV to find the next litigation case.
