I pulled the codes from the DSC using INPA... Unfortunately, I still have not reloaded the English version I have, so the report comes back in German... I will say my German is getting better...

I'm getting a code 58 "Getriebesteuerung CAN Botschaftsfehler"... I think this is something about the communication of the Transmission control failure over the CAN bus... Maybe?

It has three coding parameters avail... I've tried changing the first one... That errors out before changes are made... The second one changed to 02 or 03 makes the brake light go red on the dash... The third one changed to 01 or 02 also makes the brake light go red... I did not try changing more than one at a time other than to have hill decent off with the above changes... I think I may need a manual 540i DSC module to play with... As it so happens, I have a spare in the parts car out back... Hmmmm... Might try that tomorrow...

Cheers for now all!!!

Good day all!!

Well, I had a thought!! I cut the auto shifter wires when I removed the shifter and associated parts... I had planned on pulling all the wires, but that got to be a bit more labor intensive than I initially figured... However, I may have popped a fuse or five... Some of those wires are hot at all times... I might have popped a fuse associated with the DSC or ABS system and that is the reason I can't get those light to go out... That is the first thing on the agenda tomorrow...

I have also discovered the cooling block for the AT fluid is leaking coolant at the O-rings at the block... I have not found the "delete" cap or whatever is used on the manual trans models... I am currently stuck leaving the block connected to the radiator, but no hoses going to it... Another item I need to fabricate or figure out tomorrow...

I also had a bit of a set-back with the shifter arm... It decided to break at the weakest part of my weld... I was almost home, so I was able to finagle it into 3rd gear for the remainder of the trip home... I need to get a pic before I re-weld it... It wouldn't have been such an issue if I didn't cut it TOO short in the first place... I'm going to brace it after I get it tacked back together... Welding cast aluminium is such a pain!! I'm so close to making a sand mold for it and just melt down an old alternator housing to fill in the void...

Okay, that is all for now!! I'm getting close to getting my next project vehicle... I have decided against doing the 4.6is... The better half seems to have adopted it has her own... And it is really running and driving too well to take off the road...

Cheers for now!!

Good day all!!

Well, this is the whole assembly that is dedicated to the trans cooler... I guess I could block off the hose ports... I think they have some... Or figure out a way to block off the ports in this plastic part...

This is the valve that directs water...

It goes here... The three hoses attach to the three ports... Duh, right...

And these are the seals that are leaking... For now, I'm going to seal these up better, until I can figure a way to delete the unused hoses... Three less hoses to fail!!!

And here is the shifter arm in progress... MIG attempt...

Here is the finished product... Going to TIG and filling in was much cleaner, despite more time consuming... It is also better to put this assembly together prior to install in the vehicle... Come up from the bottom is easier with the yellow boot pull cord...

Two issues down... One issue to go...

Cheers for now!!

Good day all!!

I know I have been neglecting my updates... I apologize!! Been busy figuring out what to do next... But I have to pass this along as I find it very interesting... I noticed the other day that my radio will control my steering wheel adjustment... Here's the story... I listen to one radio station, more or less... When that one annoying commercial comes on, I just hit the ON/OFF button... After a few minutes or so, I hit the button again... Recently, my steering wheel will telescope out when I turn the radio back on... UNLESS it is already out... This has happened more than once, so it can't be just random chance... How crazy is that?!

I would also like to report that I can indeed break the tires free on dry pavement... Only one will spin as I don't have DSP working yet, and no locker for the E53 as far as I know...

I still have to replace the rack, but I've been playing with the other vehicles in the fleet... I did find a DS mirror glass at the YPIY!! It is so much better having the DS mirror again... The mirror itself was broken and hanging, but I only needed the glass, so win-win-win for me...

I'm looking into a 2004 that has motor issues... I have the white 2004 that has consistently given me trans issues from the moment I got the rebuilt motor installed... I'm going to put my rebuilt motor from my white one into the new sport black one... Maybe I'll be able to use the 2004 on a daily basis!!! I'll be parting out the original 2004 shortly there after!!! I don't have much in it, so I'll say the parts will go cheap so they all will go fast... I have too many parts cars as it is... 2000 540i parts car that needs to go after I pull the drive train...

Okay, that is all for now...

Cheers all!!!!

Good day all!!

I got the new second drive shaft back the other day... This was actually made for a member in the Bronx, but I haven't heard back so I'll just hang on to this one for a while in the event he returns from vacation or what have ya... Since I got the old parts back this time, I figured I would share what they do at the shop...

Here are all the parts... Top section is from the 740i (or 540i)... Obviously, the finished product... and the E53 section... I only pull the front sections of both vehicles... I also pull the bearings... It is not really necessary to pull the bearing from the 540i section, but...

Here is the 540i (or 740i) end... They just use the end and use new, thicker tubing...

And the E53 end... Add this to the other half after putting the bearings back...

Cheers!!

Great updates! I can't wait to do mine!

FYI, according to Google, "Getriebesteuerung CAN Botschaftsfehler" = "Transmission control CAN message error"

Absolutely!! Ready GO!! How is your parts list coming?? I'm looking at upgrading my house and property to put an adequate shop in the back for such projects... If the 4.6is keeps throwing up a transfailsafe, it will be the next to get the good stuff... I'd prefer to wait for my shop though...

I think the DSC / ABS is still looking for the automatic trans somewhere... I may need to just copy the settings for almost every module in my 540i, and transfer the obvious ones to the X5... Maybe I'll get better engine fuel trim mapping too... The X5 still seems like a slug compared to the car, despite having far better acceleration gears in the X5...

Ahhhhhhh, back to work...

Cheers for now all!!!

Slowly. Like you, I'm kind of waiting until I can get a workshop built. Trying to work on a major project with a half dozen vehicles in front of a two-car garage takes a lot of the fun out of it.
