Just because everyone else is doing it, still does not make it a good idea for me. But I believe it, and understand the rationale.

BTW, just in case there is a situation where the fob is still alive, but somehow there is a mechanical failure in unlocking, it is probably at least worth a try to hold down the unlock button on the fob until the windows are supposed to roll down. If the keyless entry system is still alive and confused, thinking someone is trying to steal this 15 year old car, then it will probably block the window roll down too. But worth a try.

FYI - when my door lock broke, holding down the unlock button did NOT roll the windows down. There was zero functionality

As upallnight said, install a RHD lock cylinder. Then you can mechanically unlock from the passenger side as well.

Personally, I like only having one lock cylinder... but that's just an aesthetic personal taste thing. On my E46 I deleted the driver's side one also, but they still had a mechanical lock at the trunk too.

On an RHD (right hand drive) X5 the lock cylinder is on the right side of the vehicle... or our passenger side. You could then unlock the passenger side manually using the key.

Yes, we all know that. What he's patiently trying to explain is that BMW makes RHD cars too, to be driven in England, for example. For those, they cleverly put the one external lock on the right door so English drivers don't have to crawl through from the left side, cursing those Americans and Germans yet again.

The suggestions here are that if anyone cares enough to add a second external lock, the parts are already available from BMW, sold for the RHD versions. So you could buy those and install them yourself and would have a second external lock.

My door lock never broke, but holding down the unlock button does roll down the windows and open the sunroof. And holding the lock button does close the windows and sunroof.

Here's a video of it in action.
