Panoramic Roof repair

Hey all, have a 2006 X5 with a panoramic roof. The roof tilts open and closed without issue (surprisingly) but the rear inside cover appears to be missing. I can only assume it is stuck inside the headliner in the rear. But when I try to open the sunroof, the forward cover moves back to just forward of the headliner opening and stops. Then the sunroof doesn't open at all. Push the switch forward and it slides back where it belongs but the rear cover never appears.

Any ideas on how to get this all back together and working properly again without replacing the entire sunroof cassette? I've read a huge number of posts, but can't seem to find one that addresses this issue.

Thanks for the help!

take pics.
there two large piece of fabric that rolls out from rear to front to shade the pano roof glass.
if the rear piece isn't coming out, it must have ripped off its guide wires/assembly and you'll need to remove headliner (good luck, not hard just time consuming and a PITA) and remove the cloth thats stuck somewhere. I NEVER have my cloth shade closed (covering up the beautiful glass), so personally if I was in this position, I'd just remove and disguard and never fix the missing cloth shade.

Can't say I'd want to leave our pano roof uncovered like that. I live in Chestermere and it's still a solar trap even with our colder climate.

Our '04 roof is still working fine, but every time I open it I dread the possibility it'll crap out.

To the OP: yes, pix will help. One of these days I need to tear my headliner out as we have a water leak that fills the glovebox if the car is left parked in the rain with the nose lower than the tail. Lost a Garmin Nuvi and an iPod one rainy afternoon.

You can try running the initialisation procedure to see if it will clear the mis-operation. Turn the key to the on position, press and hold the sunroof switch in the vent position (ie, upwards, towards the sky). Keep pressure on firmly, the full cycle takes awhile. After 15 or so seconds of holding the button, the procedure will start. It will step through all the movements and motions until complete. It is important to maintain the switch position until it has completely finished the test cycle. If you are still having problems and you can get the front shade to slide far enough backwards, the next step is to remove the rear glass. With the rear glass out, you can view from above (and from the back seat) to see what the issue maybe with the rear shades. I had both of my shades out this past week to have them recovered as the lining had become un-glued, so this is fresh in my mind at the moment.

Thanks, Neil! I've already attempted the re-initialise process to no avail. But if I can take the rear glass out and get to it without dropping the headliner, that would be great.

Did you have to take out both front and rear to remove the shades or just the rear?

I'll also try to get some pictures by this weekend too!

I was able to remove both shutters through the opening exposed by removing the rear glass. There are 6 screws on the front and 4 screws on the rear shade. You have to move the shades in steps to reveal the screws. Once all screws are undone you can slide the shades to free them from the side mountings. Not easy, but possible. Given the problem with your rear shade, this may not work for you.

Image is of location of rear glass mounting bolts. Says one use only, but I re-used them. I found with the glass in the vent position, access to the front bolts was easier. Torx 25 I'm sure.

There is extra info over on this link, but I only found that this morning, I didn't use it. Gives detail on how the rear and front shades interact. Mine were both functional so I was able to work with the cassette in the car.

Bringing back this old thread to show some appreciation to Neil

The headliner cloth of my pano roof shade of my '06 has now peeled off, hanging from the shade and sponges inside crumbling and coming off.

Was able to move out the shades for repair via removing the sunroof glasses.
I removed both the front and rear pano roof glasses though, for the ease of it. Pretty straight forward process.

SO relieved that I did not have to remove the whole roofliner, as I have experienced it on my past bmw and knew how PITA it was.

Now off to peeling and scrubbing off the yucky adhesive sponge grimes and putting on some new liners

Thanks for bringing this to the top of the posts. Very good info here.

While you're at it, replace the Pano roof seal. A new seal really helps (so I am told) with the road noise. The seal is BMW Part # 54107430946

I plan to do both the shade recover and the seal later this year.

The new seal is super beneficial. Wind noise reduction is noticeable right away. And yes, its common for our headliners to sag.

And removing the whole headliner is not hard at all. A little bit of work, about an hour, and its out.
