ESS M54 Supercharger for my 5MT

ESS M52TÜ/M54 VT1 Supercharger System - ESS Tuning

I am thinking of getting one of these for my 03 5mt. I had a Dinan SC on my 1999 Coupe I bought back in 02. I really liked the whine of that thing.

Anyone else with thinking of getting one? We would have 3 pedals and similar power and torque as the v8 guys. Similar is used loosely.

I considered one of these very seriously for my '04 3.0. But what I never looked too deeply into was why they didn't offer the twin screw units for the E53. Now that I've been futzing with the E46 330, I am once again playing with the idea of one of these for it.

FWIW, I have run an ESS SC on my 540i6 for over 10 years. I have always been pleased. I have always wondered why they petered out on the N62's for LCI 4.4's and 4.8's plus the 545, 645, 745, etc. If they'd look my way, they could probably convince me to let them try one on my 4.8. But that is not a look I need to think ab rt now.

That E46 SC looks like it could transform the relatively benign E46 3.0 into something approaching the twin turbo 335 power.

In my opinion and Porsche 951/335Xi/TRD 4Runner SC experience, there is nothing like SC or Turbo power coming on.

Something else to dream about for my E46

I always thought about adding a twin screw to the X or the wagon. Maybe I can scrounge some overtime this year and fund a stage one for shits and giggles...

I feel like it would make it more fun to drive but with the tall 4:10 gears and only 5 gears you would be rowing too much to enjoy it. A 3:64 gear change from the 4.4 would probably make a big difference.

I was thinking that too. I wonder how much it would lower the rpms at 75mph in 5th with that part change from the 4.4.

4.10 ratio is a lower gear ratio. Going to a 3.64 would result in slower acceleration and if the vehicle could push the wind out of the way higher top speed.

I am in the middle of removing the 3.91s in my 4.6 and replacing them with 4.10s. Rear is in place. I discussed a six speed replacement with a ZF specialist. He thought it a bad idea due to the complexity of integrating the additional computer controls.

This conversion was done on an E38 7 series. Granted, it's not AWD, but the tech and running gear of the day is pretty similar. I do not know if Brett Anderson actually put his hands on it, but something about the conversion has his name in my head for some reason. It may have been the custom driveshaft.

It was an interesting story. The E38 was called 'Baby' and the ID of the guy who did was Simeon. IIRC, he got in some pretty deep trouble over his shenanigans when he transported the car to Germany to tool around. From then, I do not think there remains much of a trace of the conversion.

Edit:
Well- it's been a few years since I looked. Baby's got a build site: Link Looks pretty limited. He does not go into the time in Germany and he does not talk about the rear window popping out in OneLap from chassis flex. Wow. The things we remember after so long...

Bcred, your technically right about slower acceleration. But, in a sense, I counter that in the case of the e53, I'm faster with 3.64 diffs than 4.10s. I have more gear to wind out a high reving m54. 0-60 consists of ONE Gear change. (7k redline) The transmission has some pretty low gearing still. (1st is 5.10 or so). Coupled with software, this is a different beast. If the weather is nice, I'll take everyone on a canyon YouTube ride. I can still tow just fine, and in 6th and in the meat of the powerband she still pulls great. If I'm crusing lower rpms, a downshift accomplishes everything you want. (135 is not a big reach) At some point wind resistance becomes your enemy. Not sure where yet. But I have more head room in 4th and 5th, where a stock e53 my peter-out. Once or if the salt flats dry out, I'm going in for some legal runs. More on that later.

Question is, do they make a 3.64 front diff for the X5?
