Scuttle/Micro-Filter Fastners
I am trying to track down the 'correct' rivets/fastners for the Windscreen Scuttle on my 4.8is. Right now I appear to have a mixture of thumb screws that have springs attached. These are the type that you push in a give a half a turn to lock. Then to to undo you reverse the process and watch as the screw disappears over your shoulder, fired by the spring. Now, my local BMW parts guy tells me: I should have eight (x8) "expanding rivets, with eight grommets" He see's no spring loaded screws? He is checking from the VIN & Reg number. I have ordered these up but am curious as to what I should have? It is possible that previous owner has substituted the "expanding rivets" with the "sprung screws" I do not know? Can anybody tell me what I should have please? Oh the reason I need to know? At 55mph or above? The wind is making a noise like a howling banshee. It is the loose scuttle that is the culprit. Take it off, problem solved. But I need it on there, properly secured, if possible. |

The dealer is correct - the plastic windscreen scuttle is held on with eight expanding rivets. But I think you are talking about the cover in front of the scuttle.... It covers the e-box, the brake master cylinder and the cabin filter. It's in the parts fiche under air conditioning (not under vehicle trim).
The spring clips are the correct item but the retainer behind them (that the spring clips clip into) are often lost. My dealer lost mine, doing a service, then charged me for new ones. Part number is 51711947419 and it's called a nut. ![]() Read this thread... https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...ng-loaded.html

Thank you for this. That explains a lot. I have now ordered the part number in the post along with the locking spring loaded screws. BMW still seemed very unsure what I will actually receive.
Fingers crossed. |

Okay. What I received was eight of the retainer clips (as seen in the post above) and eight screw in slot head rivets. BMW tell me that these rivets superseded the spring loaded rivets that I had? Well they fit but are a very poor design and would require absolutely minimal force to simply pop out of the retainers. I remain unconvinced that they have sold me the correct parts. But they remain adamant these are correct for my car (using the registration).
Anyways... I put all eight of them in and.... I still get the noise at 65mph. I can drive through it or slow down out of it. My next port of call is to tape down the small gap that runs the length of the pollen filter lid itself. |

The eight pop rivets sound like the retainers for the actual windscreen scuttle and are not the correct parts. If they are 51218205295 and look like this... ![]() ...then they are the wrong part. I don't think you can buy the quarter turn spring clips (basically, BMW's plastic version of a Dzus fastener) separately - they appear to only come with a complete cover assembly. BMW Part number 64318409048 ![]() More images here... https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...g/64318409048/ Looks like there are six of the retainers pre-fitted to the new cover. HTH...

I had a look at the E83 X3 and it seems that the X3 uses similar clips the ARE available separately.
![]() They don't look to be identical and they aren't listed as fitting the E53 but I guess they might... https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...h/64318385244/

Many thanks for your help here. I will take a look at the X3 ones you posted. It's crazy that a common consumer part cannot be easily found by a main dealer and several different parts guys all searching the BMW systems? They are absolutely adamant that what has happened is that the screw in rivets they have sold me now are 'replacement' parts for the sprung half turn rivets that were on the car? I am not convinced by that as they just about fit where the screw thread only just catches the retainer, meaning that any slight pressure would allow the whole thing to come apart again. Here is what they have given me: 51 71 1 947 438 PUSH BUTTON 51 71 1 947 419 NUT |

![]() They do get five points for trying though - the parts you list do actually go together but only in the trunk of an E30 Touring, securing the rear trim, not in an E53 securing the micro-filter cover. The Nut part is right for the E53 but the Push Button isn't. RealOEM.com - Part Search RealOEM.com - Part Search Other parts sites confirm this. As have you, by trying it!
