Good day!!

I got the pictures to load...

This is the welded support I made from just the original blue angle iron in the last set of pictures... I'm using the engine hoist to hold the bar and pulling down on my 3/4 inch breaker bar... I may have been okay using my 3/4 inch impact, but this worked without any question...

Parts cleaning

Head work... I made the valve spring compressor on my workbench since I couldn't find what I wanted already available... You may also notice that I used BMW hardware to hold it together...

New main bearings... Note “G” printed on the bearing face...

All clean!!

I wish I got more pictures of this!! This is the oil valve that usually comes out in an oil change. It was covered in the 2004 rebuild, I think on page 14...

Back together and installed.

Heads going on before being rebuilt completely...

Torqueing... three passes on initial torque... The first four bolts tightened in the sequence actually moved to get to the initial torque AGAIN... Once you are good with all of them at the initial torque, then you can be fairly confident they will all end up close to the same value after your 100* and 100*...

All done...

BAM!!! Covers are on... What a pain these are... Keep in mind that there are guides at the base of the covers on the inside bottom edge... These need to be cleared first or they will catch on the bottom lip of the cylinder head and you could potentially break the cover if forced... Ummmm, ask me how I know!! I didn't break my cover, but the center one did catch... Start at the bottom and work your way up... I used a rubber dead blow hammer to assist with install...

Cover for oil cooler lines block off... So, you get the rubber eyelet thingys that hold the dress-up covers on the valve covers in the kit... I used the old ones to block off the cooler line holes and this old pump pulley flange to keep the oil in the block... Oil will flow past the regulating valve when it's cold... Once this was blocked off, I could spin the motor (no spark plugs) to prime the oil system... I used assembly lube, but I like to have oil present in the passages to limit the low oil pressure time...

Again using the knock sensor locations for engine lifting...

Crooked going in... It worked...

Tight here...

Drop down, push in, down, in, down, in...

Removed this to go in easier... Four bolts... Easy to get to on the pass side when the motors installed...

Something was always rubbing at this stage...

Almost there!

Done!!

That's it for now... I did have most everything done... Intake manifold is still off... and a few other things need to be installed...

Cheers!! For now!!

Amazing. I am curious, are you self taught or did you go to school to learn how to do all of this?

Ummm... I took auto mechanics in high school... It actually took up half my day my senior year... "Most Outstanding Student" awarded by my teacher... Does that count as schooling? I never went to an actual trade school to be an automotive technician... I decided to get my ASE Cert a couple years back... I signed up for the tests and passed them all without doing any practice tests... I have my ASE Master Certification and don't even use it... I think it might be in the DNA...

Cheers!!

You must be a natural. One day I hope to be at your level. I only started a few years ago and will be swapping a manual transmission on my auto e46 xi in a couple of years. Even if it takes me a 100 hours it will be worth it for the experience. Good job.
