Auto Tilt Steering

I have a 2001 x5 3.0. I cannot stand the steering wheel moving everytime I start and turn off the engine. Is there any way to stop this. Basically I want to set the steering wheel and leave it where it is. The real issue here is the steering wheel doesn't always go back to where I've set it. Sometimes it retracts too much are moves higher then I've set it. Thanks for any help to disable this feature. Cheers

there are problems with the steering wheel motor. mine had constant problems like yours: not tilting back up to the same place, and twitching at times. you should check this at your dealer and ask them to replace the motor, if you're still under the warranty. also you can ask to program your key(s) so that the steering wheel doesn't tilt when you turn off the car.

Adjust the steering wheel in the standard position(Standard Position - Custom Position - pushed and lifted till end)...and use Memory package...Press Red knob first and button number 1...hold for 10-15 seconds.
Should work...pls let me know the outcome...

You can't stop it. It would be like stopping the seats from moving when different people got in the car. It is programmed to the key.

Actually the dealer, at the behest of BMW NA removed this option (auto retract on ignition on/off) during a service visit not long after I purchased the vehicle. They were having to replace too many steering column motors under warranty. The only way I can have it is to program it into seat memory for my key. Since the complete software update, performed when my LKM was replaced, it is hit or miss if it works with the key. Also the dipping mirror sometimes goes off all on it's own. If I were looking for software to control high explosive blasting at a quarry or something BMW would be the last place I would ask! And some people are going to allow their Bimmer to park under computer control??

I don't like the auto retract either (that was the first thing I asked about the day I picked up my X), but my dealer could not program the darn thing to stop "auto retract with ignition on/off" My way around it is to just set the steering wheel to the highest position possible and adjust my seat accordingly.
