Left rear door airbag unit 4.6 -03

Hi. I have some kind of intermittent problem with left rear door srs unit. Srs indikator lights up spontaniously in the dashboard. Everytime i plug in my code reader it says left reardoor unit. If i erase the code im good to go until next time. The time can wary from a couple of days to a couple of weeks/months. Anyone knows what can cause this problem?

Could be a loose wire in the connector, a short in the wire somewhere, a bad airbag, a bad module, etc. Some electrical diagnosis is in order and unfortunately not fun. Good luck tracking it down.

Easiest thing to do would be to try replacing that airbag with a good one and see if it comes back. That should be fairly cheap to try.

I have thought about the wiring. I dont know if the e53 suffers from wear in cables in the gap between the door and chassis by the hinge. In sweden the scrapyards doesnt sell airbag units. So a new one is the only possibility for me. Im going to start by removing the door panel and check the wiring and connector there. Thx for answer

Did you do a door handle carrier replacement? Could have pinched the airbag wires when you went to resecure the airbag back onto the door.

No. But one of the previous owners has definetly been doing some kind of work inside that door. The panel dont sit flush with the door due to some half broken clips.

You can always have the rear ones coded off at the dealer. My X5 had them coded off by BMW but they are there in the event I decide to activate them. I suspect the original owner had infant seats in the back and had them turned off as such.
