Could be. Pad wear is indicated by a sensor on the front left inboard pad and the right rear inbound pad. As the pads wear, the sensor contacts the disk and is also worn, until it goes open circuit. A red brake warning lamp then appears on the dash - as well as a warning message (on the high cluster only).
Faulty sensor wires can also cause the lamp to light.
