I have bilsteins with h&r springs. Ride is stiffer, but I prefer it over squishy OEM air ride.

I have a '01 4.4i, Turner Motorsport front control arms with the bearings, Caster camber plates, Polyurethane bushings throughout the rest of the suspension. H&R front lowering springs, rear air bags and 20" style 87 wheels.
I put Bilstein B6's all the way around and I can't wait to take the rear ones off! The truck handles excellent, the front feels perfect but the back bucks every time you hit a little bitty pebble! I contacted Bilstein, they told me you can't run the B6's (on the rear) with airbags on an X5. And they won't revalve them for me! I'm going to try B4's.

Hi,
I’ve got similar set up changed my front air bags and strut Arnott combo.
The rear I went for sport Arnott bags and bilstein B6, the rear ride is awful feel like I’m on a roller coaster.
I then changed the rear bags for comfort and it’s a little better but I believe the roughness is from the B6 shocks.
Did you ever fit the B4s if so is the ride much smoother like OEM?

I've just fitted Bilstein B4 struts up front - very good. Very like factory (or what I imagine factory was like - I didn't own the car from new).

Think I'll go with B4 units on the rear too, given so many comments about the B6 units being super harsh (as you would expect with a sport shock...).

The key is that high gas pressure monotube shocks will almost always give a rough ride at low to moderate speeds. There's a reason why they are shipped OE on almost nothing.

Bilstein B6es are high gas monotubes.

I've owned a lot of monotubes. Bilstein, AST, Moton, Ohlins, Advance-Design... Might be forgetting one or two in there. The only sets that really rode well is the heavily customized set of Bilsteins rebuilt to my tastes by FatCat on my E36, and the Bilsteins on my truck. Every other set, including many sets of Bilsteins has had major ride quality tradeoffs.

Bilstein B4s are twin-tube shocks, like stock. They're a little stiffer, but they ride well.
