We have to understand that E39 engineering while only younger about 5 years in production date, it does come from era of better parts and quality control. No offense, but I never understood made in USA craze. Sure, it's patriotic and it helps US jobs, but if you're after quality it doesn't matter made in China or Uzbekistan. It's about manufacturer using (or not) highest quality controls and materials in production. Another example of South Carolina plant sloppiness: My X5 ($70k BMW flagship at that time) has no paint at side edges of the hood and the areas around where front and rear doors meet. Not noticeable till you raise the hood or open the doors and than it looks like Yugo 45 paint job. Not really helping my sale pitch, but it's a fact.

I have three BMWs and it is, objectively, a pain in the ass. For a guy with three cars you'd be shocked how often I end up in a taxi - usually to or from a repair shop. My wife has a '17 Explorer - it's bigger, faster, has more options and costs less. I enjoy driving it at least as much as the X5 and maybe as much as my M3. At one point I decided to sell my fleet and move to one car. I ended up choosing a Land Rover Discovery Sport. I agonized over the online options builder, but ended up kitting it out in red, with black accents and wheels and a cream leather interior. Almost a clone of my X5. Oops. I decided to keep the BMWs. None of the kids particularly give a crap about the Explorer. They love the X5. My littlest draws pictures of it and is happy every time he can get inside. The BMWs get looks and attention - the Explorer only gets the "cop/not-a-cop" glance. We go to events and on adventures in the BMWs. We go grocery shopping and on commutes in the Explorer.

I'm very interested in the X5. I've had an X5, but i'm quite familiar with BMW. I currently have a F10 M5, and had a E39 M5 also. I was really looking for a silver or blue ( my first choice). I guess when your looking for used you can't always be to picky. I'm probably crazy for wanting 2 BMW's, but it's one of the things on my bucket list. I will try to PM you if i can. Thanks

The E39 does seem to be built better but I currently daily a 2003 x5 4.4i with 145,000 miles about 50 miles a day. Just replace as many old parts as you can and it will be bullet proof. My M5 sits in the garage most of the time but has been just as reliable as well.

Man, if only you were selling this a month ago when I flew to Chicago to buy my 4.6is to bring her home to Chattanooga. Clean example - hope you can find something just as rewarding to drive as a replacement.

Hope you found a good one. I'm still strangling with decision. She's going to dealer tomorrow for recalled airbag replacement and she's all sorted out other than non functioning key remote. I've tried 17 zillion things, nothing. Key starts, locks unlocks but remote is stubbornly dead.
