Out of curiosity, what did your shop charge for those repairs? I'm looking at the same issue with my '03 4.6is after recently replacing the timing chains and guides and rebuilding the VANOS myself. It can't be more difficult than that task!

IMO you might as well continue with the collapsible replacement coolant pipe
now. If it's near 100K, it's done. Not a cheap repair, but it's a one and done
modification. You are 3/4 of the way in there.
